Trucking Laws
Regulations applicable to large trucks, those that weigh 10,000 pounds or more, differ from the ones that regulate motorcycles, cars and small trucks.
Interstate (federal) trucking regulations, as well as Missouri and Illinois intrastate trucking regulations, are devised in such a way as to reduce the numbers of persons killed or injured in truck-car accidents. The regulations govern truck maintenance, the securing of loads, and truck routes. The regulations also require background checks for drivers and limit the number of hours they may drive.
Trucking companies must hire qualified truck drivers who must periodically undergo drug and alcohol testing. Truck drivers must keep updated log books and be in compliance with hours-of-service laws. In general, truck drivers may drive no more than 11 hours after 10 consecutive off-duty hours.
Unfortunately, trucking companies are pressured to cut costs, and drivers—who are typically paid by the mile—are under financial pressure to driver longer hours, faster than the speed limit, and faster than the road conditions allow. As a result, people are killed or hurt in truck accidents.
