Major Interstates in Illinois

Interstate 24 runs from Pulley Mills, Ill., at I-57 to Chattanooga, Tenn., at I-75. Thirty-six miles of the highway is in southern Illinois.

Interstate 39 stretches from Normal, Ill., at I-55 to Wisconsin State Highway 29 south of Wausau, Wis. The 139 miles the highway covers in Illinois takes it through the cities of Normal and Rockford.

Interstate 55 runs north-south from Chicago, Ill., at Lake Shore Drive to La Place, La. Throughout the Chicago area it is called the Adlai Stevenson Expressway. I-55 stretches 313 miles through Illinois, intersecting with I-74 and I-39 in Normal and with I-80 in Shorewood.

Interstate 57 runs from Miner, Mo., to Chicago, Ill., at I-94. Most of the highway, 358 miles of it, is in Illinois. I-57 intersects with Interstate 70 at Effingham, with Interstates 72 and 74 at Champaign, and with Interstate 80 at Tinley Park.

Interstate 64 begins in O'Fallon, Mo., and ends in Chesapeake, Va. Only 131 miles of the road is in Illinois. I-64 runs along with I-55 and Interstate 70 through East St. Louis and intersects with I-57 in Mount Vernon.

Interstate 70 runs from Cove Fort, Utah, to Baltimore. The Illinois span covers 156 miles. I-70 intersects with I-57 in Effingham.

Interstate 72 begins in Hannibal, Mo., and ends in Champaign, Ill., where it intersects with I-57. The 182 miles of I-72 passes through the cities of Springfield, Decatur and Champaign.

Interstate 74 runs from Bettendorf, Iowa, to Cincinnati, Ohio. The road's Illinois stretch extends 221 miles, through the cities of Peoria, Champaign, Normal and Bloomington.

Interstate 80 is the second-longest highway in the U.S., beginning in San Francisco and ending in Teaneck, N.J., just outside New York City. Its 111 Illinois miles run through Chicago's southern suburbs, including the city of Joliet.

Interstate 88 extends just 143 miles, from Chicago at I-290 to Moline, Ill., at I-80.

Interstate 90, at more than 3,100 miles, is the longest interstate in the U.S., running from Seattle to Boston. Only 123 miles of that distance is in Illinois, where the road runs through Chicago, Elgin and Rockford. In this region I-90 is known as the Kennedy and Dan Ryan Expressways, the Northwest Tollway and the Chicago Skyway.

Interstate 94 connects the Great Lakes with the Intermountain region of the U.S. The eastern terminus is in Port Huron, Mich.; the western end is Billings, Mont. Only 61 miles of the highway are in Illinois, near the Chicago suburbs of Skokie, Waukegan, Calumet City and Highland Park.

Major Interstates in Missouri

Interstate 70 spans Missouri, stretching from Illinois to Kansas. The longest east-west corridor in the nation, it runs through 10 states, beginning in Maryland and ending in Utah.

Interstate 29, which cuts through northwest Missouri, runs from Kansas City to North Dakota.

Interstate 35, also located in northern Missouri, stretches from Minnesota to Texas, passing through downtown Kansas City.

Interstate 55, a north-south corridor, begins in Chicago and ends at the Gulf of Mexico west of New Orleans.
