Trasylol (Aprotinin)
On Nov. 5, 2007, Bayer AG agreed to suspend marketing of the clotting drug Trasylol (aprotinin) after it was linked to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. The move was made in response to independent studies, as well as a Bayer-funded study, that raised questions about the drug's safety.
Trasylol is an antifibrinolytic agent that is used mainly in cardiac bypass surgery to reduce blood loss and the need for transfusions. In late October, a Canadian study titled "Blood Conservation Using Anti Fibrinolytics: A Randomized Trial in Cardiac Surgery Population (BART)" was stopped after preliminary findings suggested that Trasylol increased the risk of death. A data safety monitoring board found that:
- The death rate in the group of patients who received Trasylol was higher than that in the comparison group of patients, who received either epsilon-aminocaproic acid or tranexamic acid.
- The death rate in the group of patients who received trasylol was higher throughout the study.
- An excessive number of patients who received Trasylol died within 30 days of receiving the drug.
Trasylol was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1993 and marketed by German-based Bayer AG. The drug was aggressively promoted by the company. After the preliminary findings of the BART study were revealed, the FDA pressured the company to act.
