Motorcycle Accidents

As the number of motorcycle owners continues to climb, so, too, does the number of motorcycle-related accidents and injuries. The attorneys at Carey, Danis & Lowe have helped motorcyclists and their families nationwide who have been hurt as a result of the carelessness of others.

Motorcycle ownership has increased dramatically. According to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration’s 2006 report “Recent Trends in Fatal Motorcycle Crashes: An Update,” the number of new motorcycles sold in the United States grew by almost 130 percent between 1995 and 2003. The fastest-growing groups to embrace the thrill of the open road are women and people older than 50.

Unfortunately, the increase in motorcycle ownership has been accompanied by a similar increase in the number of motorcycle-related injuries and deaths. The number of fatalities has increased by 89 percent since 1997. Moreover, when measured by miles traveled, motorcycle riders are about 34 times more likely than automobile passengers to die in a motor-vehicle crash.

When the carelessness of another causes or contributes to an accident, the motorcycle rider or the family of the motorcyclist may be entitled to compensation. The seminal “Hurt Report” noted that in two-thirds of multiple-vehicle accidents involving motorcycles a motorist violated the motorcyclist’s right-of-way. The failure of motorists to notice motorcyclists was also found to be a common cause of motorcycle crashes. Drivers involved in accidents often did not see the motorcycle before the accident or until it was too late to avoid the crash.

If you have been hurt in a motorcycle accident resulting from the negligence of another or a loved one has been hurt or killed in such an accident, please contact our attorneys for legal assistance as soon as possible.
